CCL Labels Food and Beverage division were looking to hire a European Sales Director to manage sales across Europe for the sleeves division, with a team of Sales Directors. The division consists of 6 plants and 4 sales teams, covering Europe, Russia, and CIS regions.
Every Sales team has a Sales Director whom they report into and they in turn currently report into the Managing Director/Country Manager, this structure has evolved due to several acquisition’s that have been made over the years. The new structure will include the European Sales Director taking on responsibility for the Sales operations and reporting directly into a new Managing Director who will move into his new role early Q1.
The successful candidate will be strategically focused, adaptive, commercially savvy, an excellent communicator, have excellent management skills and a proven experience of bringing teams together. In terms of the current management style the senior team within the business are able to operate very autonomously.
What is our approach?
We recommended an Executive Retained Search campaign for this position. The search would focus upon identifying suitably qualified, high calibre individuals with the requisite skills for the position. We recommended the use of the following supporting activity, which is exclusive to a retained assignment and differentiates from our competitors.
- Candidate Briefing Pack – Background and History of Company, overview of business culture, breakdown of the position, reporting structure and required skill set
- Job Description – As a business we can work with our client to create a suitable job description to fit the needs of the client whilst being attractive to the candidate market place
- Progress Reports – Reports on a weekly basis will be provided in order for the client to understand what progress is being made, along with feedback from the market and any challenges or thoughts thus far.
Once suitable candidates were identified we conducted extensive interview discussions to refine our shortlist for the position. We retained confidentiality on this role as it was not announced internally at the time, which ensured absolute confidentiality until we reached the shortlist stage. It is an option to build the business brand within the market through a comprehensive advertising and networking campaign also. After the initial stages had been completed we submitted detailed reports on those individuals we considered were most suitable for the role, until the best and most accurate shortlist is found.
We will also manage the logistics of the interviewing process, providing feedback both ways, as the assignment progressed. After 2 interview stages which we guided CCL throughout there were two candidates remaining in the process, we then took 360 degree referencing on each potential candidate which gives a holistic review of the candidate from a peer, a client and a superior combined. We maintained complete discretion and confidentiality at all times to ensure that sensitivity was not breached during the process.

After the final meeting and when our contact in CCL had decided who they were going to employ we worked closely with them to devise an attractive offer which we then delivered to the candidate. There were some negotiations managed by Hudson James/Vitae but the role was concluded successfully.
This project was not a database hire, nor did it rely on referrals alone. It was a multi-faceted methodology which ensured that the market was discreetly saturated and any appropriate candidates were approached.
